Henry began carving at age ten. He apprenticed to his craft in the traditional way through experimentation and association with other artists. His influences include: Frieda Diesing, Alvin Adkins, Don Yeomans, Victor Reece, Phil Janze, Dempsey Bob, Reg Davidson and George Clutesi. From 1982 to 1983, Henry studied at the Institute of San Miguel D’Allende in Mexico. In 1986, Henry received his native name “Wii Gwinatt”. In 1987, he completed formal art training at Vancouver’s Emily Carr College of Art and Design. Henry supports aboriginal initiatives through his lectures, workshops and training programs for young artists. He instructs basic design, tool-making, woodcarving and silver engraving.
